Punjab United delivered a convincing and commanding performance in their first pre-season friendly, on Tuesday evening. They were able to secure a 3-0 win over Greenways FC.

From the first whistle, Punjab looked lively and eager to test Greenways, with quick passing and determined runs. Early signs of threat came from number 9 Roman Campbell, who established himself as an aerial threat, winning header after header, and challenging every single one. Campbell almost gave Punjab an early lead in the opening minutes, rising to meet a corner cross, only for his header to only just sail over the bar.
The first breakthrough in the game arrived in the 23rd minute. Following a corner, the ball was deflected out by the Greenways goalkeeper, only for it to find the boot of Ashley Probets, who showed excellent technique and timing and was able to connect beautifully with the ball for a stunning volley, sending the ball flying past the Greenways goalkeeper. The goal was a deserved reward for Punjab’s early dominance and set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Punjab maintained control as the first half progressed, with Chris Edwards proving a constant threat on the wing. Edwards repeatedly fought his way forward, delivering dangerous crosses into the box, even when under immense pressure. His crossing ability would prove cruical as the game progressed.

Just before the half came to a close, Captain Wayne Bushell was able to make a sliding goal line clearance, allowing Punjab to keep their lead.
The second half saw Punjab continue to push for a second, with manager Chipie Sian, giving opportunities to several trialists and substitutes. These fresh legs renewed Punjab’s intensity, and it wasn’t long before Punjab would make it a double. In the 55th minute, Chris Edwards once again found space on the wing, and delivered in a cross, even though it was parried by the goalkeeper, substitute Jayden Hussain reacted quickest, sending the ball crashing into the net on the rebound to make it 2-0.
Greenways struggled to find any rhythm, as Punjab’s midfield worked tirelessly to win back possession and disrupt any possible Greenways advancements. Number 11, William Johnson Cole was incredibly influential in this regard. He played a vital role in shielding the defense, challenging for loose balls and drawing fouls in attempts to relieve pressure on the defense, but apply pressure on the Greenways attack. His physical presence helped Punjab maintain a firm grip on the game, allowing them to continue dictating the tempo of the game.
Punjab's third goal arrived in the 73rd minute. One of our trialists delivered a beautifully crafted cross from the right flank, which found the head of Alife Moynes, and Moynes wasted no time heading it home with conviction, to put the result beyond doubt.
As the final whistle blew, Punjab United reflected on a highly satisfying performance. Valuable minutes were offered to numerous trialists, many of whom seized the opportunity to showcase their talent. Communication was a key part of the game, and it was notably strong, and there were encouraging signs of chemistry growing once again throughout the squad.

Pre-season will continue, as the squad take a trip down to Harrow, London to face off against Southern League Division 1 side, Rayner's Lane FC, on Saturday the 5th of July. The match promises to be another valuable test, giving the squad a chance to build further fitness and cohesion against strong opposition.
